The 2nd Annual Cody Johnson Championship Event will take place from October 7 to 12 in Belton, Texas. Last year, Andrew Ward and Jake Long took the team roping title, and this year the field is shaping up to be even bigger.
Johnson reflected on last year, saying, “I got to compete my hand against the best in the world.”
That experience has fueled excitement heading into 2025, with demand for entries higher than ever. Cody himself entered on the very first day.
This year brings exciting changes. Breakaway roping has been added as a 2026 American Rodeo Qualifier, and a special youth roping day will also be introduced. Johnson explained why he calls it the “Championship Event.”,
“I didn’t want it to be limited to team roping itself. Who knows, one day we might have a match bronc riding or a bull riding to change things up.”
The event isn’t just about competition. It will also feature a Cody Johnson acoustic set and a benefit auction supporting Texas FFA. Last year, the charity side of the event raised over $100,000, and Johnson is determined to keep that momentum going.
The Texas FFA holds a special place for Johnson. He recalls his grade school teacher once telling him, “You need to be a cowboy and a country music singer.”
Reflecting on that, Johnson said, “It took me almost a lifetime to figure out how to put those two together.”
Through this event, Johnson hopes to use the roping platform to,
“Give back to somebody, someway, somehow.”
