Famous Dex, an NFR qualifier in the bareback riding from Brookman Rodeo, has passed away at age 9.

Famous Dex was the runt of his colt crop in 2013, but his heart, try and confidence allowed him to eventually buck at the 2020 and 2021 NFR. In 2021, he was a part of history as he teamed up with Kaycee Feild for his record-setting 26th NFR Go-Round win.

“Absolutely nothing will be able to fix the hurt in our hearts today as we lay to rest one of our very best. It sounds cliche, but these horses are family,” Brookman Rodeo wrote on Facebook the day of his passing. “We feel lucky to have been his people, but will miss him so incredibly much.”

According to ProRodeo.com, Famous Dex suffered a leg injury in Pendleton this year, but was able to exit the arena. Once he returned to the ranch in Montana, however, his condition worsened and the difficult decision to put him down was made.

Famous Dex’s final out was a buckoff of Ty Breuer on Sept. 17.

“He had a pretty large impact on us,” Cathy Wieferich, owner of Brookman, told ProRodeo.com. “The cowboys loved drawing him because he was rank. He was ranch raised, so it was really neat to see him go on and be a big bucker.”

Famous Dex finished his career in ProRodeo with 25 outs of 45+ points and a buckoff percentage of 38.4.
