Sherry Cervi is a four time barrel racing World Champion that still competes today. The contestants competing at the National High School Finals Rodeo got a special treat when Cervi shared some of her knowledge with them on the opening day.
“Kids are so influenced at this age and I think having positive role models in their lives and positive experiences is so important. I love talking to kids and want to try to give them some positive words about life because sometimes it’s not easy but if you stay focuses and keep positive things in your life you’ll get through the obstacles,” Cervi said.
Cervi competed in all six girls events in high school rodeo and barrel racing was the one she struggled with the most. It wasn’t until her senior year that she qualified for the National High School Finals.
“I always wanted to be a barrel racer but I was a better breakaway roper and goat tyer. It brings back really good memories being here. I’m so grateful that my parents put me in high school rodeo, it taught me to be a competitor,” she said.
Looking back on her experience in high school rodeo, Cervi learned about the mental side of rodeo and she says it helped set her up for her career in professional rodeo.
