Barrel Racer Abby Phillips Talks RodeoHouston, Big P and Her 2025 Strategy

Abby Phillips advances to the Semi-Finals at RodeoHouston.

Abby Phillips conquered RodeoHouston in Round 1 of her Super Series when she picked up the Go-Round win with a wicked 14.71-second run. The tough set up had nothing on the National Finals Rodeo qualifier as she finished with $3,750 to her name and a spot in the Semi-Finals.

Phillips’ horsepower in Houston was not the sorrel mare we saw her succeed on in Las Vegas but instead, was her gelding, Big P, who stepped up to the plate in the best way.

“Big P, he’s the type of horse that just rises to the occasion. If you do your job, he’s going to do his so that can give me a lot of confidence going into and arena like this,” Phillips said.

This is Phillips’ third trip to RodeooHouston and she is coming back at the Semi-Finals. As she looks at 2025, her strategy for the season has changed since past years but the Louisiana turned Texas cowgirl and veteran barrel racer knows that rodeo is a marathon, not a sprint.
