Bareback Rider Wyatt Denny Looks Back at Winning the Coveted Resistol Rookie of the Year Title in 2015

Wyatt Denny is a three-time National Finals Rodeo bareback rider and in 2015, he was the Resistol Rookie of the Year.

Denny grew up in a family that was proactive, not only did they have him mutton bustin and riding calves, he was on horseback learning the ropes of all things western.

Denny’s original interest was in bull riding until the bucking horses came into view at age 13 thanks to his older brother, Grant.

“It was about Grant at that time, whatever he’s going to do, I’m going to try to do it better than him. It was the big rivalry, it was the big ‘I’m going to be better than you at this’ and we always kind of butt heads that way and thrive off of each other and that’s kind of how I got into it,” Denny said.

From getting tossed around to being a multi-time NFR qualifier, Denny went through all the stepping stones to become one of professional rodeo’s best including high school rodeo, a full ride to college rodeo in Texas.

Denny would go on to be the Intercollegiate Bareback Riding Champion his junior year of college while still hitting the pro road. It was not long until Denny was feeling the pressure from fellow cowboys to buy his pro card.

“I didn’t want to listen to them at first and I won about $10,000 on my permit my second year and I said, alright, I’ll give it a go,” he said.

The momentum carried him to the Resistol Rookie of the Year title, something the he says boosted his career.

“It’s not something easy, it doesn’t come by easy and I’m very grateful for everything Resistol has done for me and helped me with. Like they say, you live it everyday,” he said.
