Bareback rider Trenten Montero, 31, has passed away after succumbing to injuries he sustained earlier in August at the Owyhee County Rodeo.

Montero, his wife, and his newborn son were on their first rodeo run as a family of three when the bareback rider was rolled on by his horse after a ride on Aug. 10.

Montero suffered critical injuries that included a lacerated spleen and pancreas, three fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, a collapsed lung, multiple pelvic fractures and damage to his aorta. He died on Aug. 30.

His wife, Maria, posted a tribute to her husband on Instagram announcing his passing late Wednesday night.

“There are no words. Heaven took my best friend and made him an angel,” she wrote in the post. “Trenten kept his promise and fought until the very end. Strongest cowboy and greatest man.”
