At the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s 2021 Junior Steer Show with President and CEO Chris Boleman

We met up with new Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo President and CEO Chris Boleman, as well as Aven Horn, winner of the Reserve Grand Champion Simmental title, this week in Houston!

While the rodeo was canceled for 2021, the junior livestock show was in full swing, dedicated to honoring its financial commitment and mission to promote agricultural practices to the Texas youth.

Boleman talks about how HLSR made its plans for this year’s Jr. Show in the midst of the COVID-19 restrictions, the guidelines put in place to protect the health and safety of everyone involved, and the importance of this show for young exhibitors y following the shutdown of last year’s show.

“We knew that they already had projects on feed. We were working with the Texas 4H and FFA programs to really understand what was happening across the state. That coupled with when we shut down last year, many of them did not get to show. ... So we wanted to make sure we could do what we could to get them here.”

Aven talks about her Reserve Grand Champion Simmental steer Einstein, her success on the circuit, how she got started showing, and what the experience means to her.

“I think showing steers teaches you very valuable life lessons,” she says. “It teaches you hard work, dedication, how to manage your time ... it teaches you life lessons that you will need in the long run.”
