A Conversation Between J.J. Hampton and Marty Yates

After her round win on Wednesday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, 17X world champion breakaway roper J.J. Hampton met up with her nephew tie-down roper Marty Yates.

They talk about the calves they pulled and their first performances, their experience at the new Dickies Arena, and RFD-TV’s The American.

Finishing fifth in the world standings this year, Yates automatically has a spot in The American finals (he’s also a 2X American champion and holds the arena record in the calf roping) while Hampton has qualified twice, giving her two shots at getting there through the semi-finals.

“You’ve roped there and won it twice,” Hampton says, “so you’ll know what to do and how to tell me.”

“Oh yeah,” Yates replies with a grin. “I think you know exactly how to do it.”
