Steer wrestler Jacob Edler will be out until at least July after tearing his ACL and partially tearing his meniscus on Feb. 26 at La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros in Tucson, according to Kendra Santos.

“I blew the barrier out, and got that steer gathered up to be very fast at Tucson,” he said. “Then that steer takes a step into me, and he’s weak enough to where he just crumbles over my left leg. I heard something pop. I knew.”

Edler had surgery in Kansas on March 6 and now hopes to be back by the NFR Open, which begins on July 11.

The Iowa cowboy will now likely have to wait to compete in his second NFR. In his first and only trip to rodeo’s biggest stage, he was the Average and World Champion.

“I had the magical year in 2020, when I finally filled all the big rodeo goals I wanted to fill,” Edler said. “So maybe this setback isn’t all bad. Maybe having a little time to mentally prepare for what I want to do in 2024 is a blessing in disguise.”
