Stetson Wright and Josh Frost remain head and shoulders above the rest of the bull riding field, but down near No. 15 is where things get interesting.
Six-time NFR qualifier Shane Proctor has made a big move and is now slotted at No. 15 and the next five cowboys gunning for the final spot in Vegas are all within $6,100 of him.
1. Stetson Wright, $239,442
Over the Weekend of August 7, Wright won the Mountain Valley Stampede (Utah) which came with $3,450 payday. The 2020 World Champion also finished sixth at the Larimer County Fair and Rodeo (Colorado).
2. Josh Frost, $187,592
Frost had a very good trip to the Lea County Fair and Rodeo (New Mexico). The two-time NFR qualifier won the PRCA rodeo with 89 points aboard Deplorable and also finished second at the Xtreme Bulls. Between those two events, he won almost $10,000.
3. Jeff Askey, $137,963
Askey split second with Josh Frost at the Lea County Xtreme Bulls thanks to two rides of 88.5 points and 89.5 points. The four-time NFR qualifier also won $1,160 with an 83 point ride at the Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo (Kansas).
4. Garrett Smith, $117,297
Smith has notched two rodeos win over the last week. He rode Paleface for 90 points to win the Lea County Xtreme Bulls and was 89 on Ted to win the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo (Colorado). Since July 30, the three-time NFR qualifier is 5-for-6 with four scores of 87 or more points.
5. Sage Kimzey, $115,633
Kimzey will miss the remainder of the regular season due to injury, but will likely still qualify for the NFR.
6. JR Stratford, $98,525
Stratford has been tearing through the state of Kansas in the last 10 days. The 19-year-old was the champion of the Cowley County Rodeo and Jayhawker Roundup, won the Long Round at the Dodge City Roundup and finished second at Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo. Since July 31, he is 4-for-5 and all four have been 86 or more.
7. Trey Kimzey, $90,185
Kimzey won $1,587 for an 80 point ride at the Champions Challenge (Nebraska), but since then he is 0-for-5.
8. Maverick Potter, $88,212
Potter’s last week has been similar to Trey Kimzey’s. He finished fifth at the Champions Challenge and then rode a pair at the Lea County Xteme Bulls. From there, he bucked off his next four.
9. Creek Young, $85,947
In August, Young is 5-for-8 with two rodeo wins. He won more than $3,000 at the Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo and then went 90 in the Short Round win the Dodge City Roudup, which won him nearly $5,500. The one-time NFR qualifier has moved up two spots in the week.
10. Roscoe Jarboe, $78,450
Jarboe has not competed since June 25 due to injury. He will miss the remainder of the season.
11. Lukasey Morris, $78,232
Morris has not ridden since Fourth of July weekend due to surgery on his left leg. The 19-year-old said on July 18 that he will be out around three months.
12. Ky Hamilton, $74,984
Since California Rodeo Salinas concluded on July 24, Hamilton is 1-for-9. His one ride, however, won him the Mountain Valley Stampede (Utah) and a $3,500 payday.
13. Trevor Kastner, $73,461
Kastner has made one qualified ride in August and it won him Iowa’s Championship Rodeo on Aug. 6. The win earned the six-time NFR qualifier $5,652.
14. Trey Holston, $73,401
In August, Holston has moved up one spot and won around $7,000. He has covered 4-of-8 bulls and all four rides have been 80 points or better. The 23-year-old is riding 48 percent of his bulls this season.
15. Shane Proctor, $69,640
Proctor won $12,000 at the Richland County Fair and Rodeo (Montana), he was only 74 points, but was the only cowboy to ride. Proctor is 3-for-6 in August and has moved up five spots this month.
16. Jared Parsonage, $66,764
Since The Calgary Stampede, Parsonage has won just $388. He has dropped two spots.
17. Reid Oftendahl, $66,314
Oftendahl covered both of his bulls at the Dodge City Roundup, including a 90 in the Short Round, to win $4,790 at the event.
18. Brady Portenier, $64,561
In August, Portenier is 1-for-9. His lone ride won him $398.
19. Ernie Courson, $63,703
Courson won the Champions Challenge on Aug. 1 and the next day, he finished third at the Dodge City Xtreme Bulls. Those two rodeos paid more than $7,000 combined.
20. Tristen Hutchings, $63,581
Hutchings has won $602 since the end of Cheyenne. The 22-year-old is looking for his first NFR qualification.
